Late registration

Late on your California registration? What the late fees mean

Late penalties are set by the state and add up with time. Here is how to stop them growing and what you can and cannot change.

Lucky Registration Services is a private registration service, licensed by the department, OL# 86193. We are not the DMV or any government agency. DMV fees vary by vehicle and are paid to the state; our service charge is separate. You can do this directly with the DMV without paying our service charge.

The short answer

DMV does not offer a grace period on renewals. Your registration expires on the specific day shown on your registration card, not just the month on the sticker. Renewal fees are delinquent after midnight of the expiration date (or 60 days after DMV's notice, whichever is later) (VC 9552(b)).

Penalties are a percentage of your vehicle's license fee plus flat late fees, so they vary by vehicle and depend on how late the renewal is. Estimate yours with the DMV's own Vehicle Registration Fee Calculator, or call us and we'll help you check the exact amount DMV shows for your vehicle.
