VIN verification near me: what Orange County drivers need to know

A vehicle verification (REG 31) confirms the VIN, plate and a few other details match the paperwork. It usually comes up with out-of-state cars and some title problems.

Lucky Registration Services is a private registration service, licensed by the department, OL# 86193. We are not the DMV or any government agency. DMV fees vary by vehicle and are paid to the state; our service charge is separate. You can do this directly with the DMV without paying our service charge.

The short answer

A VIN verification is a physical inspection of a vehicle, recorded on the Verification of Vehicle (REG 31) form, that DMV may require before it completes a registration. (VIRPM 1.165)

When a licensed verifier is on our employee list, we can inspect and document eligible vehicles by appointment, subject to service area and availability. Call first so we can tell you whether your vehicle is one we can do.

When DMV always requires one

Who can do it

Authorized verifiers are DMV employees, peace officers, auto club employees that provide registration services, and people licensed by DMV as vehicle verifiers. A licensed private verifier can do out-of-state vehicles and vehicles with no California record.

Questions people ask

Do I have to take my car to the DMV for a VIN verification?

Not always. DMV employees, peace officers, auto club verifiers and DMV-licensed private verifiers can verify. Revived salvage or junk, specially constructed vehicles, motorcycles with an unavailable California record, and vehicles with a missing or illegible federal safety label go to DMV.

Who fills out the REG 31?

The verifier, who must physically inspect every descriptive item on the form.
